The PADI Rescue Diver course in Boracay is the one almost every diver ends up calling their favourite. It is the course where diving stops being only about you and starts being about the team around you — learning to anticipate, spot and solve problems in the water before they turn into emergencies. It is demanding, genuinely fun, and it changes the way you dive for good. This guide walks you through exactly what the course covers, the first-aid training that comes with it, who can take it, and how we run it here in Boracay.

What is the PADI Rescue Diver course?

Rescue Diver is the certification that teaches you to manage dive emergencies — your own and other people's. Up to this point your training has focused on looking after yourself; Rescue Diver widens that out to self-rescue, recognising and preventing problems, and helping tired, panicked or unresponsive divers at the surface and underwater. You practise real scenarios until your responses feel automatic, so that calm, switched-on awareness stays with you on every dive afterward. It is the last recreational step before the professional Divemaster rating, and a prerequisite for it.

Why divers call it their favourite course

Ask around any dive centre and you will hear the same thing: Rescue Diver is the course divers love most. It is challenging in the best way. You finish it diving with more confidence, more awareness of your buddies, and — because you now know how to prevent and handle problems — a lot more relaxation and fun on every dive. Many divers say it is the moment they stopped being a passenger underwater and started being a genuinely good dive buddy: the person everyone wants in the water with them.

What you'll learn

The Rescue Diver course is built around handling real situations. With us in Boracay, you will learn to:

• Help other divers who are tired, panicked or in difficulty, at the surface or below.
• Spot and fix minor gear and buddy issues before they grow into real problems.
• Use an emergency oxygen kit and perform CPR and first aid.
• Manage a dive emergency calmly — from the first response all the way through to handing over to emergency services.
• Sharpen your underwater navigation and overall in-water awareness along the way.

The in-water sessions are where it comes together. You will role-play scenarios — a leg cramp, a tired diver, a panicked diver at the surface, a missing buddy — with your instructor and other students, repeating each one until your reactions feel natural rather than rehearsed.

EFR: the first-aid half of the package

Emergency First Response® (EFR) is CPR and first-aid training, and it is the prerequisite for Rescue Diver — so we bundle the two together at a better price than booking them separately. EFR covers primary and secondary care: CPR, illness and injury assessment, bandaging and splinting, and using a pocket mask and emergency oxygen. You practise hands-on with a CPR manikin and finish with a role-play scenario, no prior experience needed. It is a genuinely valuable life skill in its own right — useful far beyond diving — and it slots neatly in before the Rescue water work.

Prerequisites — can you take it?

To enrol on the Rescue Diver course you need to be a (Junior) Adventure Diver with a completed Underwater Navigation dive, and hold a current EFR certification (or an equivalent Red Cross or AHA CPR certification taken within the last 24 months). The minimum age is 12. If you are not certified that far yet, our Advanced course covers the navigation dive you need, and the full Rescue + EFR package sorts the first-aid prerequisite for you — so you can arrive ready without chasing certifications one by one. How the course runs in Boracay

Both halves follow the same proven path: flexible PADI eLearning you complete at your own pace before you arrive, then hands-on skill practice with your instructor. Knowledge development runs around 5–10 hours of self-paced online study across the two courses, on any device, online or offline. The in-person part is performance-based — you practise each skill until you are confident before moving on — and the whole package typically runs across 2 to 4 days in Boracay's calm, clear water. All training gear and materials are included: CPR manikin, emergency oxygen kit, first-aid and bandaging supplies, pocket masks, and a full set of well-maintained scuba equipment for the water sessions. If we ever have to cancel an in-water session for unsafe sea conditions, we reschedule it at no extra cost.

Your three options

There is a path to suit where you are starting from. The full Rescue Diver + EFR package is the most popular — both courses bundled together at a saving, ideal if you do not already hold a current first-aid certification. If you already hold a current EFR, Red Cross or AHA CPR certification within 24 months, you can take the Rescue course on its own. And if you just want the first-aid training, EFR stands alone too — it is open to everyone, divers or not, and takes about half a day. Prices change with promotions and what is included, so check the product page for the current rate; booking the bundle always works out cheaper than taking the two courses apart.

Where Rescue Diver leads

Rescue is a turning point. It is the final step before Divemaster — your first professional rating and the doorway to working in the dive industry. It is also the gateway to Master Scuba Diver: combine Rescue with five PADI specialties and you earn the highest non-professional rating in recreational diving, held by only a small fraction of divers worldwide.
