Real freediving instructors,
trained by a pioneer.

New Wave Divers is dedicated to safety and to teaching freediving the way it should be — calm, precise and world-class. The IDC is where that philosophy goes professional, under the guidance of one of the most experienced Instructor Trainers in the sport.

This isn't a rushed certification. Your course is run to (and beyond) full PADI Freediver standards, with a strong focus on water time, real teaching practice and the safety skills every instructor must master — so you finish as a confident, capable freediving instructor, ready to teach anywhere in the world.

Once certified, every candidate is welcome to join the free internship program — assisting real classes and training sessions for as long as you like, so you step into the job with genuine experience, not just a card.

Inside the IDC

What you'll
master.

Over five days minimum, JP builds you into a freediving instructor across six connected topics — from course standards to safety, physiology and the business of teaching — plus environmental care and a written final exam.

1

Standards & Procedures

The PADI Freediver system inside out — the courses you'll run, how they're structured and the standards you must always meet.

2

Learning & Instruction

How people actually learn, and how to plan and deliver clear, engaging knowledge-development sessions.

3

Teaching & Supervising

Demonstrate skills to instructor quality and supervise freedivers in confined water and open water, calmly and safely.

4

Safety & Risk Management

Rescue, LMC and blackout management, buddy procedures and lanyard use — the non-negotiable core of every session.

5

Physiology & Psychology

The science of the breath-hold and the mind — the knowledge that keeps your students relaxed, capable and safe.

6

Organizing & Marketing

How to run, promote and grow your freediving business — plus care for the environment and your written final exam.

Earn it in the water

The performance
standards.

A freediving instructor leads by example. Alongside the teaching and theory, you'll demonstrate these performances with mastery — the same numbers Freediving Planet holds every candidate to. Train with us beforehand and you'll arrive ready to hit them.

Demonstrate with mastery

Four core performances

Minimums to pass
STA

Static ApneaA single breath-hold, face down, held with calm and control.
DYN

CWT

Constant WeightDescend and ascend under your own power, never pulling the line.
FIM

Free ImmersionPull gently down and up the line with perfect equalization.
Stamina1 min vertical finning at the surface, elbows out of the water, then a 20 m constant-weight dive.
Rescue & examBlackout rescue from 20 m + a 50 m surface tow with rescue breaths — and pass the PADI Instructor Exam with a 75% minimum score.

The essentials about going pro with New Wave Divers in Boracay. Got a question we haven't covered? Message us on WhatsApp any time.

To start the Freediving Instructor Course you need to be a certified PADI Master Freediver (or equivalent), be at least 18, and hold a current First Aid / Emergency First Response (EFR/CPR) certification no older than two years. Not there yet? Our train-before packages take you all the way up to Master Freediver — and we can run your EFR — before the course begins.

The Instructor Course itself is five days minimum. Most candidates add training days beforehand to sharpen technique and hit the performance standards comfortably — we'll recommend how many based on your current level when you register.

Yes — that's our most popular route. Arrive early and our coaches will train you to the performance standards and certify you up to Master Freediver, so you flow straight into the IDC fully prepared. EFR can also be completed with us beforehand. Everything can be bundled into one tailored package.

To pass you'll demonstrate, with mastery: Static 3:30, Dynamic 70 m, Constant Weight 32 m and Free Immersion 32 m, plus a stamina set, rescue exercises (blackout from 20 m and a 50 m surface tow) and the PADI Instructor Exam with a 75% minimum score. Our pre-course training is built around getting you there.

Your Instructor Trainer is Jean-Pol François (JP), co-founder of Freediving Planet, former head of AIDA Education and one of the first PADI Instructor Trainers in Asia — with 34 years in the sport and 20+ world records judged. You're learning from one of the true pioneers of freediving education.

We run two intakes a year: one around July/August and one around January/February. Exact dates are confirmed on request — register your interest and we'll send the next available course.

Because every candidate starts from a different level, prices and availability are quoted on request. Tell us where you are today and which route you want — IDC only, train + IDC, or the full EFR + Master + IDC pathway — and we'll send a tailored package quote.

You'll be able to teach and certify PADI Basic Freediver and PADI Freediver right away, as an independent, worldwide-recognised instructor. After 25 certifications you can upgrade to Advanced Freediver Instructor, and 25 more takes you to Master Instructor.
