Want to try scuba diving with your friends or family rather than on your own? Group Discover Scuba in Boracay is the easiest way to get everyone underwater together on the same day — no experience, no certification and no strong swimming required. It's the same beginner-friendly guided dive as a solo try-dive, just organised so a whole group shares the moment: the nervous laughs on the boat, the first breath below the surface, and the reef photos you'll all be arguing over afterwards. This guide explains what a group Discover Scuba day looks like, who it suits and how to book one at our PADI 5★ resort.
What is group Discover Scuba Diving?
Discover Scuba Diving (often shortened to “DSD” or a “try dive”) is a PADI experience built for complete beginners. It isn't a course and it doesn't earn a certification card — it's a real, guided dive on a living coral reef, led by a PADI professional who handles all the technical side while you relax and enjoy the reef. “Group” simply means we run that experience for several of you at once. Your friends or family learn the basics together, gear up together and dive together, with the group split into small pods so no one is ever more than an arm's reach from a PADI pro. If you're weighing it up, our first-timer's guide to Discover Scuba Diving covers the solo version in more detail.
Who is a group try-dive for?
Almost any group of adults or older kids who want a shared first experience underwater:
- Friends on holiday — the classic reason people book a group Discover Scuba dive: try something new together instead of just lying on the beach.
- Couples — a first dive side by side is a genuinely memorable thing to do together in Boracay.
- Celebrations — birthdays, hen and stag trips, reunions and anniversaries. It's an activity everyone remembers long after the party.
- Colleagues and team trips — a shared challenge in a safe, guided setting is far better team-building than another buffet dinner.
- Families — parents and older children (from age 10) regularly do their first dive together. If your group includes younger kids, our family-friendly diving guide covers the options for the little ones too.
Not everyone in the group has to dive. Anyone who'd rather stay on the surface can come along and join a snorkeling tour over the same reef, so no one is left behind on the beach.
How a group Discover Scuba day works in Boracay
The whole experience takes roughly 2–3 hours and follows two simple steps for everyone in the group.
Step 1 — The briefing. You'll start with PADI's DSD eLearning, a short phone-friendly introduction to the safety fundamentals that takes about 20–30 minutes and is available in 30+ languages — handy for a mixed international group. At the dive centre your instructor then covers the same basics in person: how the gear works, how to breathe on a regulator and the few simple skills you'll use underwater. We teach in up to nine languages, so everyone can learn in the one they're most comfortable with.
Step 2 — The dive. Your PADI pros fit everyone's scuba gear, you practise a couple of easy skills in shallow water — like clearing your mask and equalising your ears — and then you follow your guide on a gentle dive over the reef, to a maximum depth of just 12 metres (40 feet). Larger groups are split into small pods, each with its own PADI professional, so the experience stays calm and personal rather than a crowd following one guide. Start times are typically 9 AM, 11 AM and 1 PM, so a group dive slots neatly into a holiday day with plenty of beach time left over.
Where you'll dive and what you'll see
Boracay's dive sites are a short boat ride from shore, with sheltered reefs, gentle currents and excellent visibility — ideal conditions for a group of first-timers. Many of our closest sites sit right off Station 1, so you spend more time underwater and less time travelling. Expect warm water, hard and soft corals, clouds of reef fish, and — with a bit of luck — a sea turtle cruising past. It's exactly the kind of first dive that turns a curious group into a group of new divers.
What's included and what to bring
A Discover Scuba experience includes all of your scuba equipment, the guided dive itself and your PADI professional's time and instruction. You just need to bring a swimsuit, a towel and, ideally, a sense of humour — the first few breaths underwater make almost everyone grin. If anyone in the group has a medical condition, we'll ask them to complete a short standard PADI medical questionnaire beforehand so we can keep the dive safe for them.
Does everyone need experience or to be a strong swimmer?
No on both counts. Discover Scuba Diving has no prerequisites: no prior diving experience, no certification and no strong-swimming requirement. Everyone should be comfortable and relaxed in the water and in reasonable general health, but no one needs to be an athlete. The minimum age is 10 years. Mixed-ability groups are completely normal — a confident swimmer and a cautious one can dive on the same trip, because a PADI pro stays with each pod throughout.
How to book a group and pay less
Group try-dives are popular, so it's worth booking your date and start time ahead — especially in the busier Amihan season (roughly November to May) and around holidays. You can reserve online with a small deposit per person and settle the balance in person at the resort, and booking online with a cash balance earns a discount over paying the full amount by card. Prices are best checked on the Discover Scuba Diving page for the current rate, since they can change with season and group details. Planning a larger group, a celebration or a specific time slot? Just get in touch and we'll help you organise it.
Turn one dive into more
If your group catches the bug — and groups often do — a Discover Scuba dive isn't a dead end. The fee can credit toward a full PADI Open Water certification, so anyone who wants to keep going doesn't pay twice for the first steps. Some people book a second try-dive later the same trip; others go straight into the course together and leave Boracay as certified divers. Either way, the group try-dive is the perfect, low-commitment first step.
Frequently asked questions
Can a group of friends do Discover Scuba together in Boracay?
Yes. Group Discover Scuba is designed for exactly that — friends, couples, families or colleagues doing their first guided dive on the same day. Larger groups are split into small pods, each with its own PADI professional, so it stays personal and safe.
How many people can be in one group?
There's no fixed cap on the total booking — we simply divide larger groups into small pods so a PADI pro stays close to every diver in the water. For big groups or a specific time slot, contact us ahead so we can plan the boats and instructors.
Does everyone in the group need to know how to swim?
No. Discover Scuba Diving has no strong-swimming requirement and no experience or certification is needed. Everyone should be comfortable in the water and in reasonable general health; a PADI professional guides each pod the whole time.
What if some of our group don't want to dive?
They can still come along. Non-divers can join a snorkeling tour over the same reef, so the whole group shares the day on the water even if not everyone dives.
What's the minimum age for a group try-dive?
The minimum age for Discover Scuba Diving is 10 years, so parents and older children can dive together. For younger kids, ask us about the PADI Bubblemaker and other family-friendly options.
How long does a group Discover Scuba experience take?
Plan for about 2–3 hours in total, including the briefing, gearing up and a gentle guided dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres. Typical start times are 9 AM, 11 AM and 1 PM.
