Ever watched someone glide silently underwater on a single breath and thought — I want to try that? You can. Discover freediving in Boracay is the easiest, safest way to feel what breath-hold diving is like, even if you have never done it before. At New Wave Divers, our PADI 5★ resort runs two beginner-friendly Discover Freediving sessions — one in a calm pool, one in the open ocean — both designed for people with zero experience and led one-on-one by certified PADI freediving instructors. This guide walks you through what freediving actually is, which first session to pick, what your day looks like and how to book.
What is freediving?
Freediving is diving underwater on one breath — no tank, no bubbles, no heavy gear. It is quiet, minimalist and surprisingly natural. Your body already has a built-in response to submersion called the mammalian dive reflex: the moment your face meets the water your heart rate slows and your body starts conserving oxygen. Freediving simply teaches you to relax into that response instead of fighting it. Most first-timers are amazed at how much longer they can comfortably hold their breath after just a little guided practice.
Both of our beginner sessions are led by certified PADI freediving instructors. You will never dive alone, and you will never be pushed past your comfort level — the whole experience is about calm, control and confidence, not endurance or bravery.
Two ways to start your first freedive
We offer two entry points so you can start where you feel most comfortable. Both are guided, both include all the equipment you need, and both are open to ages 12 and up.
Discover Freediving — Pool
A calm, controlled pool environment is perfect if you want to understand the fundamentals before heading into open water. You will focus on static apnea: floating face-down on the surface, relaxing completely, and gently extending your breath-hold. It sounds simple, but it is the single most important skill in freediving — and nailing it in a pool builds real, transferable confidence.
What's included: breathing technique, static apnea practice, equalization basics and safety rules. All equipment provided.

Discover Freediving — Ocean
Ready to see the reef? This session takes you into Boracay's crystal-clear water using Free Immersion — you pull yourself gently down a rope to a maximum of around 10 metres, guided by your instructor the whole way. The moment you drop below the surface the noise disappears and everything slows down. Most first-timers are surprised by how peaceful, rather than scary, it feels. Your session also comes with underwater photos to take home and a 12-month credit toward a full PADI Freediver course, so your first ocean dive can count toward certification later.
What's included: full technique briefing, guided dives to around 10m, all equipment (wetsuit, mask, weight belt), underwater photos of your session, and a 12-month credit toward a PADI Freediver course.
Ages 12+ · about 2 hours
Both sessions are keenly priced for a first experience, and we regularly run a small online-booking saving. For the current rates and available times, check the Discover Freediving Ocean and Discover Freediving Pool pages directly — that is always the most up-to-date place to book.
Pool or ocean — which is right for you?
Go with the pool if:
- It is your very first breath-hold experience
- Open water makes you a little nervous
- You want solid technique before going deep
Go with the ocean if:
- You are already comfortable in the sea
- You want the full experience straight away
- You want underwater photos to take home
There is no wrong choice. And because the ocean session includes a course credit, you can always come back and go further with a full course later.
Do I need to be fit or a strong swimmer?
No on both counts. You do not need to be an athlete, and you do not need to be a competitive swimmer — you simply need to be comfortable and relaxed in the water and in reasonable general health. Freediving actually rewards relaxation over strength: the calmer and slower you are, the longer and more comfortable your breath-hold becomes. Our instructors teach you a simple, repeatable breathing routine to settle your body before each hold, plus gentle ear-equalization techniques so the pressure never becomes uncomfortable. If you have a medical condition, we will ask you to complete a short standard freediving medical questionnaire beforehand so we can keep your session safe.
What to expect on the day
Both sessions start with a roughly 30-minute land briefing covering breathing, safety and equalization — the theory you need, kept short and practical. Then you are in the water with your instructor for around 60–90 minutes. Everything is relaxed, small-group and focused on making you feel confident rather than rushing you through a checklist. You will practise your breath-up, try a few static holds or line descents depending on your session, and finish feeling like you have genuinely learned a new skill — not just ticked off an activity.
Why Boracay is a great place to start
Warm water (27–29°C year-round), visibility that is often over 15 metres, and sheltered dive sites that are calm enough for beginners but beautiful enough to keep you coming back — Boracay is consistently ranked among the best dive destinations in Southeast Asia, and it is an ideal classroom for your first freedive. You can explore more about the island's water and our full range of sessions on our freediving in Boracay hub.
Where freediving can take you next
If your Discover session leaves you wanting more — and it usually does — the natural next step is a full certification. The PADI Freediver course teaches you to freedive independently with a buddy to greater depths, and there are Basic and Advanced levels to grow into. If you would like to understand the full ladder before you book, our companion guide to the freediving courses in Boracay breaks down each level and what it certifies you to do.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need any experience to try freediving in Boracay?
None at all. Both our Discover Freediving sessions are designed for complete beginners with zero prior experience. You will be guided one-on-one by a certified PADI freediving instructor from the first breath.
Do I have to be able to swim well?
You do not need to be a strong or competitive swimmer — just comfortable and relaxed in the water and in reasonable general health. Freediving rewards calm and relaxation far more than fitness or strength.
What is the minimum age for Discover Freediving?
Both the pool and ocean sessions are open to ages 12 and up. Younger or nervous first-timers often prefer to start in the calm of the pool session.
How deep will I go on my first ocean freedive?
On the Discover Freediving Ocean session you descend using Free Immersion — pulling yourself down a rope — to a maximum of around 10 metres, always at your own pace and only as far as you feel comfortable.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
Each session takes about two hours, including a land briefing and your in-water time. Prices are set per session and we often run a small online-booking saving — check the Discover Freediving product pages for the current rate and to reserve a time.
Can my Discover session count toward a full course?
Yes. The Discover Freediving Ocean session includes a 12-month credit toward a full PADI Freediver course, so if you decide to certify later, your first ocean dive is not paid for twice.
