Kids scuba diving in Boracay starts with one magical moment: your child's first breath underwater. The easiest, safest way to give them that is the PADI Bubblemaker — a playful, shallow-water experience for curious children from age 8, always within arm's reach of a certified PADI Professional. No certification, no experience and no strong swimming required. We've been running kids' scuba programs on White Beach since 2003, so this guide walks you through exactly how it works, what age children can start, whether it's safe, and where the adventure can go from here.
What is the PADI Bubblemaker?
Bubblemaker is PADI's introduction to scuba for children. Using real, kid-sized scuba gear — a mask, fins and a light tank — your child learns to breathe underwater and float weightless in shallow, confined water no deeper than 2 metres (6 feet). It isn't a course with homework or eLearning; it's a hands-on taste of diving designed to be pure, giggly fun. A PADI Pro fits the equipment, gives a relaxed briefing, then stays beside your child the entire time they're in the water. Parents are welcome to watch from poolside.
What age can kids start scuba diving in Boracay?
There are three clear stages for young divers, and Bubblemaker is the first door in:
- Age 8+ — PADI Bubblemaker. The first breaths underwater, in shallow water no deeper than 2m. This is the right starting point for most kids.
- Age 10+ — Discover Scuba Diving. Once they're 10, children can leave the shallows for a real open-water reef dive down to 12m on a Discover Scuba Diving experience — the natural next adventure after they've fallen in love with bubbles.
- Age 10+ — Junior Open Water certification. Ready for the real thing? The Junior Open Water course certifies young divers for life, with the same lifetime card adults earn.

What a Bubblemaker day looks like
The whole experience takes about 2 hours and includes one confined-water dive. It unfolds in two simple steps:
1. Gearing up
Your PADI Pro fits scuba equipment built for children — not cut-down adult gear — then explains how it all works with a fun, relaxed briefing. There's no reading, no exam and nothing to prepare in advance. Just a bit of excitement.
2. In the water
In shallow water no deeper than 2m, your child takes their first breaths through a regulator, floats weightless and blows bubbles, with an instructor within arm's reach the whole time. Most kids are grinning before they've even gone under. Sessions run at set start times through the day — typically 9AM, 11AM and 1PM — so you can plan the dive around the rest of your island day.
Is Bubblemaker safe for children?
Safety is the reason Bubblemaker exists in the form it does. The water is shallow — never more than 2 metres — and calm, so there's no depth or current to manage. The gear is sized for children so it fits and seals properly, and a certified PADI Professional supervises your child directly, staying within arm's reach for the entire session. Your child doesn't need to be a strong swimmer; they just need to be comfortable in the water and curious. A parent or guardian's approval is required before the dive, and you're welcome poolside throughout.
What to bring and how to prepare
Preparation is refreshingly simple. Bring swimwear, a towel and sun protection — we provide all the scuba gear, kid-sized and ready. There's nothing to study beforehand. The best way to prepare a nervous child is to keep it light: frame it as a fun game of breathing underwater and blowing bubbles, not a test. Our instructors are used to first-timers and go entirely at the child's pace; if they need a minute, they get a minute.
Beyond Bubblemaker: where young divers go next
Bubblemaker is where a lifelong love of the sea often begins. When they're ready and turn 10, kids can step up from the shallows to a real reef dive on Discover Scuba, then — if they're hooked — earn a lifetime Junior Open Water certification and dive the same sites the grown-ups do. Many families make it a shared holiday: parents get certified or fun-dive while the kids do Bubblemaker, then everyone swaps stories over lunch.
Make it a celebration
Bubblemaker is also a memorable way to mark a birthday or special occasion. Gather friends and family at our PADI dive shop for a Bubblemaker party — we handle the gear and the fun, and your child gets a story they'll tell for years. If you'd like to plan one, just get in touch and we'll arrange everything.
