What is Discover Scuba Diving?
Discover Scuba Diving (often shortened to “DSD” or a “try dive”) is a PADI experience designed for complete beginners. It isn't a course and it doesn't earn you a certification card — it's a real, guided dive on a living coral reef, led one-to-one or in a very small group by a PADI professional. Your instructor handles the technical side; your only job is to relax, breathe slowly and enjoy the reef. It's the single best way to find out whether scuba diving is for you before investing in a full certification course.
Do I need experience or to be a strong swimmer?
No on both counts. Discover Scuba Diving has no prerequisites: no prior diving experience, no certification and no strong-swimming requirement. You should be comfortable and relaxed in the water and in reasonable general health, but you do not need to be an athlete. The minimum age is 10 years, which makes it a genuinely family-friendly activity — parents and older children regularly do their first Discover Scuba Diving experience together. If you have a medical condition, we'll ask you to complete a short standard PADI medical questionnaire beforehand so we can keep the dive safe for you.
What a Discover Scuba day in Boracay looks like
The whole experience takes roughly 2–3 hours and unfolds in two simple steps.
Step 1 — A short briefing (before or on the day)
You'll start with PADI's DSD eLearning — a short, phone-friendly introduction to the safety fundamentals that takes only about 20–30 minutes and is available in 30+ languages. Then, at our dive centre, your instructor covers the same basics in person: how the gear works, how to breathe on a regulator, and the few simple skills you'll use underwater. We teach in up to nine languages, so you can learn in the one you're most comfortable with.
Step 2 — Your first dive
Your PADI Pro fits your scuba gear, you practise a couple of easy skills in shallow water — like clearing your mask and equalising your ears — and then you follow your instructor on a gentle guided dive over the reef, to a maximum depth of just 12 metres (40 feet). Start times are typically 9 AM, 11 AM and 1 PM, so a Discover Scuba dive slots easily into a holiday day with plenty of beach time left over.
Where you'll dive and what you'll see
Boracay's dive sites are a short boat ride from shore, with sheltered reefs, gentle currents and excellent visibility — ideal conditions for a first dive. Many of our closest sites sit right off Station 1, so you spend more time underwater and less time travelling. Below the surface you'll drift over vibrant coral gardens alive with clownfish, parrotfish, wrasse and schools of tropical fish; lucky divers meet a curious sea turtle or spot macro life tucked into the coral. Is Discover Scuba Diving safe?
Safety is the whole reason the experience is structured the way it is. You dive with a PADI professional beside you the entire time, in calm shallow water, at a shallow maximum depth, after a hands-on briefing — and in small groups, so you always have personal attention.
