The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Freediving in Boracay
The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Freediving in Boracay
Ever watched someone glide silently underwater on a single breath and thought — I want to try that? Freediving is more accessible than you think, and Boracay is one of the best places in the world to start. At New Wave Divers, we run two beginner-friendly Discover Freediving experiences designed for people with zero experience.
Here’s everything you need to know before you book.
What Is Freediving?
Freediving is diving underwater on one breath — no tank, no bubbles, no heavy gear. It’s quiet, minimalist, and surprisingly natural. Your body already has a built-in response to submersion (the mammalian dive reflex) that slows your heart rate and helps you conserve oxygen. Freediving just teaches you to work with it.
Both our beginner sessions are led by certified PADI freediving instructors. You’ll never dive alone, and you’ll never be pushed past your comfort level.
Two Ways to Start
Discover Freediving Pool — ₱2,700 (was ₱3,000)
A calm, controlled pool environment — perfect if you want to understand the fundamentals before heading into open water.
You’ll focus on static apnea: learning to float face-down on the surface, relax completely, and extend your breath-hold. It’s the single most important skill in freediving, and nailing it in a pool builds real confidence.
What’s included: breathing technique, static apnea practice, equalization basics, safety rules. All equipment provided. Ages 12+ | 2 hours.

Discover Freediving Ocean — ₱3,600 (was ₱4,000)
Ready to see the reef? This session takes you into Boracay’s crystal-clear water using Free Immersion — you pull yourself down a rope to up to 10 metres, guided by your instructor every step of the way.
The moment you drop below the surface, the sound disappears and everything slows down. Most first-timers are surprised by how peaceful it feels.
What’s included: full technique briefing, guided dives to 10m, all equipment (wetsuit, mask, weight belt), underwater photos of your session, and a 12-month credit toward a full PADI Freediver Course. Ages 12+ | 2 hours.

Pool or Ocean — Which Is Right for You?
Go with the Pool if:
-
It’s your very first breath-hold experience
-
Open water makes you a bit nervous
-
You want solid technique before going deep
Go with the Ocean if:
-
You’re comfortable in the sea
-
You want the full experience straight away
-
You want photos to take home
No wrong choice — and the ocean session’s course credit means you can always come back and go further.
What to Expect
Both sessions start with a 30-minute land briefing covering breathing, safety, and equalization. Then you’re in the water with your instructor for 60–90 minutes. It’s relaxed, small-group, and focused on making you feel confident — not rushing you through.
Why Boracay?
Warm water (27–29°C year-round), visibility often over 15 metres, and sheltered dive sites that are calm enough for beginners but beautiful enough to keep you coming back.
